Introduction

Rajankattalai Madhusundareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Rajankattalai village, Needamangalam circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. This Shiva temple may have been in big temple at one time. Now the temple is in bad state. This temple was built in the 10th century by Kulothunga Chola.

Puranic Significance

This temple is located in the middle of the three villages, here the primary deity is called as Lord Madhusundereswarar and Mother is called as Amrithanayaki. The name Madhusundereswarar is derived from the fact that honey is always dripping from the honey comb on the top of this temple. This temple is currently functioning under the Hindu Charities Department. Although the temple has many acres of agricultural land, it was in a dilapidated state without any income, and then the temple has come up as a result of great efforts.

Toward the east are the sanctums of Lord to the east and Ambigai to the south. In front of the Lord there is a long tin shed, at the end of which Nandi is in the small hall. At the sanctum sanctorum gate are Ganapati and Murugan. There is an old Dakshan Murthy in the sanctum sanctorum which is broken so they have installed a new Dakshan Murthy idol. There is also an idol of Vishnu and Durga. On the north side of the temple there is an ancient bow tree under which there are idols of Vinayagar and Sandesar.

At the back of the temple, five Lingamurthys are placed in a row. In the north-east is the newly constructed Navagraga Mandapam. An ancient bhairavar is placed nearby the temple.
