Introduction

An Architectural Jewel from the Solanki Era, the Temple Has Become A Dumping Ground for Plastic and Other Waste and Is Home To Hundreds of Bats. For a state like Gujarat which is home to World Heritage sites –this 13th century Jain temple in Prabhas Patan town of Gir Somnath district paints a picture of apathy and neglect. It stands as proof of state administration’s dismal failure in preserving the monuments that it ironically proclaims as ‘protected’. Located near the museum maintained by the ASI in Prabhas Patan, the temple has fallen into a state of disrepair and is home to hundreds of bats. Its doors and windows broken, walls covered with algae, the premises have become a dumping ground for plastic and electronic waste.
“One of the most historic buildings in Prabhas, this temple is known for its simplicity in exterior while very elaborate stone carving in the interior. Large openings make the interior well-lit and lively. Highlight of the temple is also the torana of the main garbha griha, the central sanctorum and sculptures of the deities on walls.”
