Introduction

Poonthalangudi Jalakandeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Poonthalangudi village, Koothanallur taluk, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. After 3 km on the thiruvarur road that goes east along its south bank is Poonthalangudi village. Adjacent to the river, there is a Shiva temple facing east side. The temple is small, but a very special temple.

Puranic Significance 

          The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Here the Presiding deity is called as Jalakandeswarar and Mother is called as Utpijavasini.  The Lord faces the east and has an east-facing Sanctum. The Lord is in the form of a beautiful lingamurthi, and in front of him are a Nandi and an altar. Vinayagar and Subramaniya are at the sanctum sanctorum gate. In front of the Lord there is a long front hall with an Anjaneyar shrine towards the south side. Among the sanctum are Tenmukan, Brahman and Durga are there. In the north-east are Navagraha and two Bhairavas. There is also a pond to the south of the temple.
