Puranic Significance
- Legend of Hayagriva:
- During Pralaya (cosmic dissolution), Lord Vishnu, resting on a banyan leaf in the ocean, stored all beings within himself.
- He created Lord Brahma from his naval chord and imparted the four Vedas to him.
- Two demons, Madhu and Kaitabha, emerged from water droplets and stole the Vedas from Brahma, hiding them in Pathala Loka (the netherworld).
- Brahma sought Vishnu’s help. Lord Vishnu descended to Pathala Loka in a horse-headed form (Hayagriva) and defeated the demons.
- After retrieving the Vedas, their sanctity was restored when the Lord smelt them.
- Significance of Lakshmi Hayagriva:
- After the battle, Mahalakshmi soothed Vishnu’s fury by sitting on his lap.
- In this form, Lakshmi Hayagriva symbolizes the union of wisdom and prosperity.
