Introduction

The Muktagachha Tin Shiva temple, also known as the Shree Anandamoyi Temple, is a twin temple located outside the Rajbari (palace) of Muktagachha in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The temple holds historical and cultural significance in the region.

Construction and Origin: The Muktagachha Tin Shiva temple was constructed in the year 1820 by Rani Bimola Devi, who was the mother of Maharaja Shashikantha Acharya Choudhary. Maharaja Shashikantha Acharya Choudhary served as the Zamindar (landlord) of Muktagacha.
Twin Temples: The temple complex consists of two adjacent temples. One is dedicated to Lord Shiva, while the other is devoted to Goddess Kali Mata. This arrangement of twin temples is a notable feature of the site.
Religious Observances: The Rabidas community plays a significant role in the temple’s religious activities. They perform a two-day-long Kattyani Puja, locally known as the ‘Shat’ Puja, during the Bengali month of Kartik. These observances are an essential part of the temple’s traditions.
Mirror Structure: The architecture of the twin temples is striking, as it features a mirror structure. This means that the two temples are designed as mirror images of each other. This is a unique and remarkable aspect of the temple complex.
Arch-Shaped Doorways: The front side of the temple complex is adorned with three arch-shaped doorways, which enhance the visual appeal of the structure.
Dilapidated Condition: Over time, the temple has fallen into a state of disrepair due to a lack of maintenance and restoration efforts. Despite its historical and cultural significance, the temple’s condition has deteriorated.
Location: The Muktagachha Tin Shiva temple is situated outside the Rajbari of Muktagachha, a town located in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. Mymensingh city, the district’s headquarters, is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Although Mymensingh has no airport, it can be reached by road from Dhaka.

The Muktagachha Tin Shiva temple, with its mirror-image design and historical connections, serves as a valuable cultural and architectural heritage site in the region. Efforts to preserve and restore such culturally significant structures are crucial for maintaining the cultural heritage of Bangladesh.
