Introduction
- Adi Angalamman Temple is a 300-year-old temple located in the village of Melpattambakkam in Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.
- The temple is small in size, with a Rajagopuram and Maha Mandapam.
- Key features include a trident, flag tree, and the lion vehicle of the goddess.
- The main deity, Sri Adi Angalamman, is depicted seated on a lion chariot, holding a sword, skull, and trident.
Puranic Significance
- Around 300 years ago, the region was inhabited by the Parvataraja clan, mainly fishermen.
- When a recession hit their livelihood, the fishermen decided to worship Angalamman, their ancestral deity, and build her a temple.
- Lacking resources, they went fishing after praying to the goddess. To their surprise, they found a small ebony stone in their net, believed to be a manifestation of Parasakthi.
- A divine message guided them to build a temple, promising prosperity. The next day, their fishing yielded abundant results, allowing them to construct a small shed for the deity.
- Later, a sculptor named Mayawaran arrived, claiming to have been instructed by Parasakthi in a dream to carve her statue. He sculpted the idol that is still worshipped today in the temple.
Beliefs
- Devotees believe that childless couples who worship at the temple will be blessed with a child. After the birth, they perform the naming ceremony in the temple’s great hall.
- It is also believed that offering prayers and flowers to the goddess on Fridays helps remove marriage bans, ensuring a quick wedding.
Festivals
- The temple’s major festival is the Masi Maga, celebrated with great fanfare over five days each year.
