The Sri Megambigai Sametha Sri Meghanathiswarar Temple in Melakottaiyur, situated on the Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road, is an ancient and revered temple with a history dating back approximately 1400 years. The temple has undergone renovations and is well-maintained.

Deities: The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Meghanathiswarar, and the goddess is known as Sri Megambigai. The temple also houses shrines for various deities, including Koshta Murthas, Kannimoolai Ganapati, Valli Devasena Murugan, Chandikeswarar, Byravar, and the Navagrahas (nine planetary deities).
Structures: The temple features important architectural elements like a flagpole, an altar, and a Nandi hall located in front of the temple.
Main Deity: The moolavar (main deity) Sri Meghanathiswarar is facing west and is enshrined on a square pedestal. During renovation work, there was a need to keep the main deity in place, making it difficult to move. Shivalingam is located on the right side during Mahapradosham, and it can still be observed slightly leaning to the left side.
Theertham: According to the temple’s Thala Purana, Varunadevan, who had been cursed by Sri Durvasa Sage, established a theertham (sacred water body) at this location, worshiped Lord Shiva (Eesan), and was able to get rid of the curse. The theertham at this temple is known as Varuna Theertham.
