Puranic Significance

Etymology: The name “Mavoothu” derives from Maa (mango) and Oottru (spring), referring to the significant spring that flows under a mango tree south of the temple.
Divine Associations: The presiding deity is Mavootru Velappar, a form of Lord Muruga. The region was historically dense with Marudha and Mango trees, further cementing the connection to the mango tree and the spring.
Other Deities: The temple features shrines for Lord Vinayaka (also called Mavootru Vinayaka) and the Saptakannikas. The deities’ statues were established by the local tribes known as the Paliyars.
Historical Legend: The legend states that local cultivators, while digging for a root called Valli Kizhangu, discovered the Swayambu Velappar. This led to the Zamindar constructing the temple to facilitate worship.
