Introduction

The Kailasanathar Temple, located in Madhavaram, Chennai, has a rich history and significance.The Kailasanathar Temple is situated on Perumal Koil Street in Madhavaram, Chennai. It’s located approximately one kilometer from the Madhavaram Bus Depot.

Puranic Significance

The original temple is believed to date back to the 8th to 9th century during the period of Nandivarman II.
The temple received contributions and renovations from the Chozhas and Vijayanagaras.
The temple was completely reconstructed with a five-tier Rajagopuram and underwent an Ashta Bandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam on June 25, 2018.
The government’s HR & CE Department has plans to spend Rs 2.22 crores for the reconstruction of the temple tank.

Legends:

One legend suggests that Lord Shiva and Parvati came to this place and performed penance.
Sages and Maharishis also did penance at this location.
Another legend involves Nandivarman Pallava, who came to this place to catch robbers but ended up worshiping Lord Shiva and building a temple.

Beliefs

Devotees come to the temple to seek blessings for removing marriage obstacles, obtaining a child, and rectifying speech problems in their children.
It is believed that praying to Lord Kailasanathar here has helped many childless couples have children and has cured speech disabilities in children.

Temple Layout:

The main deity of the temple is Lord Kailasanathar, whose sanctum sanctorum faces the east.
Devi Karpagambal has a separate shrine in the temple, facing the south.
The temple also has exclusive shrines for the Jyotirlingams, Mahalakshmi, and Lord Murugan.
A Hanuman shrine is situated in the northern part of the temple.

Temple Architecture:

The temple faces east and has a five-tier Rajagopuram with stucco dwarapalakas (guardians) on the side walls.
The main shrine is raised about 3 feet from the mandapam level.
The presiding deity, Lord Kailasanathar, is about 4.5 feet high and is made of green stone.
The temple complex consists of a sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and Mukha mandapam.

Festivals

The temple celebrates various festivals throughout the year, including Chitra Poornima in April-May, Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Aadi Pooram in July-August, Vinayaka Chathurthi in August-September, Navarathri in September-October, and Maha Shivrathri in February-March.
