Introduction
Kozhikuthi Sabhapadeeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Kozhikuthi village, Kuttalam circle, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. Kozhikuthi is about two kilometres north of Moovalur in the west of Mayiladuthurai. Here the Presiding deity is called as Sabhapadeeswarar and Mother is called as Abirami.
Puranic Significance
This Shiva temple is an 11th century temple. In the north of Kozhikuthi, a sub-village of Cholampet, there is the 11th century Thondreeswarar Temple, the beautiful Azhakianathar Temple in the east and the Thirajapuram Shiva Temple in the west. The Gopalakrishna Temple is the centrepiece of the Agrahara Street opposite the Vanamuttyperumal Temple in Kozhikode. In this part of the street is the temple of Sababadeeswarar.
A king named Nirmalan had an inexhaustible physical and sinful nature, and by the guidance of the Lord, he did penance for many years under the royal tree on the banks of the Cauvery and was cured by the waters of the Cauvery. He became Maharishi because he had vision of Perumal under the royal tree. This temple was given the name “Kodihati” and “Babavimosanapuram” because it removed all the evils of Kotihati. It is now known as Kozhikuthi.
The Lord is towards the East and Ambigai is towards the South. A front hall connects the two shrines. A female deity is placed towards the south as a small one, unknown. Karurai include Tenmugan and Lingobhava Durgai. The temples have Vinayagar and Subramaniya. In the north-east is the Navgragam Mandapam, and Bhairava is on the next Sanctum. Directly opposite outside the front hall is the Nandi and the altar.
