Introduction

Kovangudi Gomuktheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Kovangudi village, Mayiladuthurai circle, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. Here the Presiding deity is called as Gomuktheeswarar in the form of Lingam.

Puranic Significance

When the Lord and the Goddess danced once and said that the Lord was a liar, the Lord cursed both of them to support it and the Lord turned into a cow and roamed around many places and got salvation in the field of worship.

In the story of Ambikaipasu and Thirumal being cursed to the earth, the legends about these cities Theraguntur, Pillur, Anangur, Thirukulampiyam, Thiruvavaduthurai, Koortalam, Thirupapadi, Velvikkudi, Kurumulaipalli, Viruvancheri are joined together to tell a single story. It is called kovangudi because it is the place where Ambigai, who turned into a cow, came and stayed. Now known as Kovangudi. Here the Lord is called as – Gomuktheeswarar, Mother Name is not known.

This place is in the southern part of Manchal. It is said that there used to be a big Shiva temple on the banks of a large pond in the eastern part of the town, and after decaying over time, some philanthropists have kept the lingam and some murtis in a tin shed. It is said that a community hall has been built at the Kulakkarai place where the temple was. The Temple lingam is believed to be 1000 years old.
