Dedication: The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. It is an important religious site in the Chera Kingdom and is a part of the 108 Shiva Temples in Kerala.
Legend of Installation: According to local folklore, the sage Parashurama is said to have installed the idol of Lord Shiva in this temple.
