Introduction

Kothangudi Kailasanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Kothangudi, Chidambaram circle, Cuddalore district. Here the Presiding deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Kamatchi amman. The temple is located 2 km from Chidambaram on the Annamalai road in the town of Annamalai. It is called Kothangudi due to the rule of a king named Kottravan.

Puranic Significance 

In 1995, a new Selva Muthu Vinayagar Temple was built in the town, and in 2008, a discussion was held to conduct the Kumbhabhishekam. It was decided to build a new temple other than the existing Vinayagar Temple, and the Kumbhabhishekam was planned to be held after completing the renovation of the Vinayagar Temple. All sections of the people agreed to it. After that, a new temple was built at a cost of Rs.16lakhs, including the deities of Kailasanathar, Kamatchiyamman, Vinayagar, Murugan, Bairavar, Chandikeswarar, and the nine planets. The construction of the temple started with the blessings of Pujya Sri Kanchi Kamakodi Peetadhipathis Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Sri Sankaracharya Swamigal of Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, and the consecration ceremony was performed. With the grace of the Lord, the temple was completed, and the Kumbhabhishekam was held on June 10, 2010, on the auspicious day of Thiruvadhirai, Anusham star, Siddhayoga, and Sadhayoga.

Special Features

The eastern entrance has a neem tree, and there is a sacred banyan tree. In the main hall, up to 100 people can worship the deity. The southern side is under the auspices of Ambal. The main hall has a Nandi facing in the north. The granite floor has the images of Subrahmanya on the right side, Vinayagar on the left side, and Sandikeswarar facing south. Worshippers can have darshan of the deities from all four sides.

Belief

Devotees come in large numbers, believing that worshiping here brings success in education, marriage and cures all diseases.

Festivals

Important festivals celebrated here include Sivarathri, Vinayagar Chathurthi, Panguni Uthiram, Karthigai, and Pradosham.
