Introduction

Bucesvara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Koravangala Village in Hassan Taluk in Hassan District, in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Puranic Significance

The temple was built in 1173 CE by Buchiraja, an officer under Hoysala King Narasimha I, to celebrate the coronation of Hoysala King Veera Ballala II.

Layout: The Bucesvara Temple consists of several key components, including the sanctum, sukanasi (vestibule), navaranga (hall), and mukha mandapa (main entrance hall).
Mukha Mandapa: The mukha mandapa, or main entrance hall, is particularly noteworthy. It has entrances on both the northern and southern sides. The southern entrance is adorned with two small elephant balustrades, dvarapalas (guardians), and Chamaradharini sculptures. The northern entrance also features dvarapalas and Chamaradharini sculptures. The temple is missing the superstructure (tower) that would typically be above its eaves.
Pillars: The mukha mandapa is supported by 32 pillars, each of which is bell-shaped and features lathe-turned and banded stellate designs. These pillars are intricately carved and add to the overall beauty of the hall.
Ceiling: The ceiling of the mukha mandapa is a stunning feature, divided into 13 parts and adorned with highly ornate concentric cusped arch designs. This intricate detailing on the ceiling showcases the craftsmanship of the temple’s builders.
Adhisthana: The base or adhisthana of the mukha mandapa is treated with pilaster turrets and decorative scrolls, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the temple.
Navaranga: The navaranga, a hall within the temple complex, is square in shape and is supported by four central lathe-turned pillars. It is a complete and well-designed part of the temple.
