Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. When the Lord’s marriage took place in Kailasam, the earth became unbalanced. To bring the earth to balance, according to the order of the Lord, Agathiyar is worshiping in all the places where the Lord’s presence is worshiped. Sage Agathiya, who had left for the south, wanted to see the Rishapur water display at all the places he visited that day. As a result, innumerable modifications appeared. He also made use of Agathiyar himself indirectly so that all of us would be blessed. All of them are called Agatheeswaram and they are approximately 163. Karaiyur is one of those places.
