Introduction

Kanavaipatti Shiva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Kanavaipatti village, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. This temple is located in a village called Kanavaipatti, 2 km away from Gopalpatti on the road from Dindigul to Natham. This Shiva temple is located on the banks of a pond spread over an area of nearly 7 acres. This pool can be found in the north-west of the temple and even today in this pool you can see the sharpening pit used by early humans to sharpen their stone weapons. Over time, the water in the pond has been submerged by the ever-increasing limestone.

The broken parts of the stone temple can be seen on the north side of the present temple. The black stones of the temple were damaged over time and must have been taken away for the use of the people. This temple was worshiped during the medieval Pandyas who ruled Madurai from 800 AD to 900 AD. The sandstone linga placed in the sanctum has worn out over the centuries, so the present linga dates back to 1100 to 1200.

In modern times, the people living in this area have kept the lingam in the temple and buried it in oil to protect it. As people thought, the temple was demolished. In the year 1994, only the head of the sculpture was visible during the restoration work at this place, which had been turned into dynamite by time. Later, when it was excavated, the present Sivalingam was found to be undamaged.
