Puranic Significance

  • Legend of Madhalolai: A demon woman cursed by Sage Durvasa gave birth to two cruel demon sons, Ambaran and Amban. They sought asylum at Lord Shiva’s feet. Lord Shiva smiled upon the mother, who later transformed into an alluring virgin to distract the brothers.
  • Conflict of the Demons: Lord Vishnu, disguised as an old man, told the brothers that only the mightier could marry her, leading them to fight. Ambaran won but was pursued by Kali (Devi), who ultimately pierced him with her trident.
  • Divine Intervention: Lord Vishnu asked Shiva to return his left side to Mother Parvathi. Devi, in penance, created a Linga of sand and prayed until Lord Shiva accepted her back.
  • Blessing of Kulothunga Chola: King Kulothunga Chola, childless, prayed to the goddess for offspring and was blessed. He offered anklets, which is why Devi is depicted with anklets on her lotus feet.
  • Parihara Sthalam: Praying to the Sun and Moon side by side alters the adverse planetary movements favorably. The temple is significant for joint worship to alleviate planetary adversities.
  • Parvatheeswarar: The temple symbolizes the grace of Mother Parvathi, to whom Lord Shiva offered half his body. Hence, he is referred to as Parvatheeswarar.
