Introduction

The Hulimav Cave Temple, also known as the Hulimav Shiva Cave Temple, is located in Hulimavu, along Bannerghatta Road, Karnataka, India, near BGS National Public School. This temple is managed by the Sri Sri Bala Gangadaraswami Mutt and holds significant spiritual value due to the belief that a saint performed intense meditation (tapas) in the cave for several years. His samadhi (final resting place) is also located inside the temple. The central area of the temple features idols of Lord Ganesha, a Goddess, and a Shiva Lingam, along with a mantap (pavilion) where the saint is believed to have meditated.

Puranic Significance:

The temple houses three main deities. The Shiva Lingam occupies the central position, with an idol of Devi (Goddess) on one side and Lord Ganesha on the other. On the opposite side of the cave is an ancient dhyana mantap (meditation platform), believed to be used by the saint during his meditation practices. The cave temple is said to be several centuries old, possibly dating back 2000 years.
Hulimavu was once known as Amarapura, which came under the administration of Saarakeya. The name Hulimavu in Kannada means “sour mango,” a derivative of the word Amru (sourness). Historical references suggest that the ruler of Saarakeya in the 17th century constructed the Kodandarama Swami Temple in Hulimavu for the welfare of the community. Around 1850 AD, the temple was renovated, and idols of Sita, Lakshmana, and Anjaneya Swami were installed.

Beliefs:

One of the unique beliefs associated with the Hulimav Cave Temple is that worshipping the idol of Agni (God of Fire) within the temple is said to cure various eye diseases. Devotees visit the temple in the hope of receiving blessings for good health and spiritual fulfillment.

Special Features:

The Hulimav Cave Temple has a natural rock cave structure, making it a rare architectural and spiritual wonder. It is known for a remarkable phenomenon during Makar Sankranti (a significant Hindu festival), when the rays of the sun pass through the cave and fall directly on the Shiva Lingam. Devotees eagerly line up to witness this divine spectacle each year.
The Shiva Lingam is centrally placed, flanked by the Devi and Ganesha idols, symbolizing balance and harmony in the universe. The cave’s dhyana mantap is revered for its spiritual energy, offering an ideal place for meditation and reflection. The temple’s ancient status is emphasized by its proclamation as a 2000-year-old single stone cave.

The Hulimav Cave Temple celebrates the grand festival of Mahashivratri, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This auspicious occasion is marked by special rituals, prayers, and large gatherings of devotees who come to seek blessings and witness the unique spiritual ambiance of the cave.
