Introduction
- Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Gangeshwar Mahadev or Gangeshwar Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Located on the seashore of Fudam Village, 3 km from Diu, near Gujarat.
- The temple is set on the Arabian Sea, offering a unique view.
- It is a cave temple situated among rocks on the seashore.
- Inside the cave, idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi can be seen.
- The temple’s main feature is the five Shiva Lingas of different sizes, submerged in the sea during high tide and visible during low tide.
- A Seshanag is carved above the rock to guard the Shiva Linga.
- The temple is also referred to as the “Seashore Temple” due to its location.
Puranic Significance
- The temple is believed to be 5000 years old.
- The five Pandava brothers (Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva) installed the five Shiva Lingas while in exile during the Mahabharata period.
- The name “Gangeshwar” is derived from “Ganga” and “Ishwar,” meaning “Lord of Ganga.”
- Ganga is associated with Lord Shiva, as he held her waters in his jata (matted hair) to prevent the earth from being flooded, hence earning the name Gangadhar or Gangeshwar.
Special Features
- The five Shiva Lingas were installed by the Pandava brothers, each reflecting their individual sizes.
- Bhima, being the strongest, installed the largest Shiva Linga.
