Introduction
Agastheeshwarar temple is a famous Shiva temple located in Dharapuram. People believe that, they get rid of all their problems, after praying to this god. This temple located in Dharapuram taluk in Tirupur District. This Ancient temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.
Puranic Significance
When Lord Shiva married Parvati in Kayilayam (Mount Kailash), the north direction bowed down and the south direction rose up. To maintain balance and harmony in the world, Shiva instructed Agastya to install lingams in various places. When Agastya came to the Amaravati River, he embedded a lingam in the sand. This lingam was later named Agasteeswarar, giving credit to Agastya. As the temple was consecrated where the lingam existed, it became popularly known as the Agasteeswarar temple.
It is said that the Pandavas lived here for a year. Unlike in temples like Rameswaram, Kumbakonam, and Kanchipuram, abhishekam (ritual bathing) is not performed for the sand lingams in this temple. However, abhishekam is conducted daily here. Before abhishekam, one can see a golden frog made of mud emerging from the lingam. Due to the significance of this miracle, Agastya wanted to consecrate a lingam brought from Kasi (Varanasi) here. But as that plan failed, he poured water from the Amaravati River onto the sand and embedded the lingam. Therefore, devotees worship Agasteeswarar here without any hindrance, believing that their wishes will be fulfilled promptly, be it resolution of legal matters, removal of obstacles, completion of studies, or finding employment.
Panchalinga Worship: In a unique manner, five lingams representing the five elements – earth, water, fire, air, and space – are consecrated in the same shrine. These lingams are placed at an elevated level. Worship of these Panchalingas during the nights of Shivaratri and Pradosha brings success in all aspects of life.
Perumal Reducing Afflictions: Sri Devi, Bhu Devi, and Venkata Ramanaswami are enshrined at the temple entrance. They bless devotees to relieve them of afflictions before they enter the Agasteeswarar temple, where the Perumal (Vishnu) resides to absolve mental distress.
