Introduction

Devangudi Kothandaramasamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama located in Devangudi village, Tiruvarur District, and Tamil Nadu. Here the presiding deity is called as Lord Kothandaramaswamy and Mother is called as Sita. The temple is classified as a principal temple under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department

Puranic Significance

The temple here is said to have been built during the Pallava period. This Kothanda Raman Temple, which is more than 500 years old, has now deteriorated to a large extent due to the weather and the heat of the monsoon season. For the past 20 years, daily pujas have not been performed, but only one time puja has been going on for a few years. Kumbabhishakam was performed in the temple in the year 1942. After a long interval, the Kumbabhishek ceremony was successfully completed.

In ancient times, it is said that the devas (celestial beings) lived in this village, hence the village got its name Devanakudi. According to the temple legend, the Shiva here is called Indrapureeswarar because Indra, the king of the devas, came from Indraloka to worship him. Sri Kanchi Paramacharya once stayed here and worshipped Indrapureeswarar.

Similarly, in ancient times, there was a blind man who used to circumambulator the Rama temple here. One day, while performing the circumambulation, he suddenly regained his eyesight. In gratitude, he donated his lands to the temple. Because of this miracle, this Rama is known as “Kan Kodutha Kodandarama” (Rama who gave eyesight).

Special Features

In Devanakudi, there is a bhajan mandali (devotional singing group) that was started by Kasi Thatha in 1909 and had its Kumbabishekam (consecration) in 1916. It is noteworthy that traditional bhajans are still performed by the villagers on Ekadashi and special days dedicated to Perumal (Vishnu).
