Introduction
Shiva Murugan Temple was initially established in a small wood framed house in San Francisco, California, way back in 1957, by an American born Hindu guru, Sivaya SubramuniyaSwami. It may have been the first Shiva Murugan to be opened in the USA. Offering Pujas to murtis of Ganesha, Muruga and Lord Shiva, it was founded on the traditions of Shaiva Siddhanta and called as the Palani Swami Sivan Temple. It quickly became a popular pilgrimage site in California. Over the years, and on traditional festival days, the small temple could hardly accommodate the crowd of devotees. Temple is situated in San Francisco Bay area Concord, California. It is connected by public transportation BART.
Puranic Significance
Shiva Murugan Temple was established in 1957 in San Francisco, California, by an American born Hindu monk, Sivaya Subramuniya Swami. It is known as the first traditional temple established in the USA. In 1988, to better serve the Hindu community, the temple was moved to a larger site to its current location in Concord, CA. Originally the temple was called Palanisami temple. Still same idol is worshiped in Concord. Temple added Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Durga and Navagraha deities over the time. It is one of the two temples in San Francisco bay area.
