Introduction
Chandrasekharapuram Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Chandrasekharapuram village, Valangaiman Circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamilnadu. There are two temples here, one is the Chandrasekhar temple and the other is the Agatheeswarar temple.
Puranic Significance
Agatheeswarar Temple is located on the main road Valangaiman-Govindhakudi road. This temple is east facing temple. The road in front of the temple is very steep, so one has to descend from the top to enter the temple. Lord Agatheeswarar has the temple facing east and Ambika is facing south. The temple is very dilapidated condition without maintenance, trees are growing uprooted here and there and the mandapams are starting to crack.
Towards the south, Agathiya Mamuni performs Shiva pooja at some temples on the banks of rivers. Puranas mention them as 163. The lingam he worshiped on the south bank of Kudamurti, a tributary of Kaveri, is now known as Agatheeswarar Temple. The Nayak style cone-shaped Arthamandapam is known as Mukhamandapam. Today there are no people to build such cone-shaped mandapams, at least the existing ones should be preserved. The Lord is a beautiful Linga Murthy with Ambika. Vinayaka is at the gate of the Lord’s sanctum and Murugan is at the Subramanian posture. There is a beautiful Nandi facade in the hall. There are no murtis in the prakara or sanctum sanctorum. The Sandesar shrine also remains empty. At the back of the temple there is a large pillar giving shade. The monastery and the surrounding wall are completely destroyed. There is a well in the north. In this temple, Nitam Puja is performed, Pratosham Chaturthi etc. is also performed. By worshiping the places worshiped by Mamunis, one can get Lordship. But today we are not only looking for the great temples, so these temples have fallen into disrepair without anyone to maintain them. The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.
