Introduction
Boothangudi Naganathar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, located in the Boothangudi village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. This Bhootangudi is 4 km from Nagore on the Gangalancheri – Nagore road. This village is located on the north bank of the river. The temples in many villages around Nagore are worshiped by the Nagas and hence the Lord’s name is known as Naganatha. Here the Presiding deity is called Naganathar and Mother is called as Soundaryanayagi
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. Lord Naganath has a sanctum facing east and Lord Soundaryanayagi has a sanctum sanctorum facing south. Bhairava and Sun are in the east corner of the hall. Nandi is outside the hall. Karurai Kottam has Tenmugan and Durgai. Here Dakshna Murthy is special with Naga. To the south-west of the temple is Varasithi vinayakar. In the north-west a lingam and its ambhika and a nandi are in a separate place. In the same compound there is also an Iyanarkoil facing west. There is a big pond in front of the temple.
