Introduction

                           So-min-gyi-hpaya Stupa (12th century) is a towering stupa located south of Myinkaba village on the southwest side of the Bagan Archaeological zone. Built in the 12th century, it is the only stupa at Bagan built with bands of glazed ornament running around each terrace. The bands, which are now mostly ruined and fragmentary, depict a variety of human and animal figures set amidst swirling bands of vegetation. Each band was built as continuous loop using individual components of varying size, typically with each piece about 20 cm tall, 20 cm wide, and about 7 to 10 cm deep with a slant on each end to allow each piece to connect more seamlessly with its neighbors.
