Introduction

Ananthanallur Anandeeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Ananthanallur village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. This is the temple where both Shiva and Perumal shrines in the same temple. But, both of them in the same temple are rare. During the Cholas period, the Anthanas lived in this place, which became the biggest temple, and the ruins have been renovated recently. Here the Lord is called as Anandeeswarar and Mother is called as Anandavalli.

Puranic Significance

Lord Vishnu, who had gained a great deal of bravery after taking Dasavadharam, felt that his spiritual strength was diminishing. Therefore, he met his guru, Suttvakki rishi, and asked for a way to regain Self-enlightenment. Lord Shiva is blessed in Ananda Nallur in the earth, and if he does penance, he can attain spiritual strength,’ said the sage. Accordingly, Maha Vishnu came here to worship and got benefited.

The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The temple faces east, the Lord’s sanctum is facing east, the mother sanctum sanctorum is facing south in an arrangement like a large sanctum. At the gate of the sanctum sanctorum there is Vinayaka on the left and Muruga on the right. Kalabhairava is towards the west. There is Nandi altar in front of the Lord. There is a sanctum sanctorum near Gomugam. In the north-west there is a large arch. As this temple is from time immemorial, there is no Navagraha shrine here. God is the giver of life without losing faith in Him. Anandavalli Ambika is the giver of blissful life. The Great bhairava gives you courage and grace. Here Perumal’s name is Anantanarayanar and he is known as Anandeeswarar because he is the Lord worshipped.
