Introduction

Ammanur Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, located in the Ammanur village, Thiruthurapoondi circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Ammanur is 2 km to the right from Thiruvarur Thiruthurapoondi road. This is a Shiva temple facing towards the east side of the town. This Shiva temple is situated on the north bank of a large and beautiful square shaped pond. On the south bank is Kulathumettum mariamman Temple. Here the Lord is called as Agatheeswarar and Mother is called as Akilandeswari.

Puranic Significance

The place is called Ammanur because it was installed and worshiped along with Agathiyarlingam. The temple is a small temple; there is no dome on the facade. The Lord presents with the beautiful elephant body. The Lord has a sanctum facing east and Ambika has a sanctum facing south. The facade has a hall with a concrete roof. There is a small Nandi in front of the Lord. Lingamurthy is of medium size and Ambika is also small. At the gate of the sanctum sanctorum there are Lord Shiva and Lord Balamurugan. There are small domes on both sides of the front gate, in which there are gods, the sun on one side and the moon on the other.

In the south of Karurai Kottam, there are Tenmugan in the north and Durga in the south. In the north-east corner, a statue of Lord Saturn is built. The temple has seen changes in the cycle of time but the interior has been transformed; it is a rarity that Agathiyar is also adorned with Ambhika. The Temple is believed to be more than 1500 years old.
