Introduction
The Garuda Brahma Temple in Alampur, Telangana, is another significant temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is part of the Navabrahma Group of Temples. It shares the rich historical and architectural heritage that characterizes the temples in this region. It is one of the nine temples in the Navabrahma Group of Temples, a group that showcases early Nagara architectural style and northern design influence.
Puranic Significance
The Garuda Brahma Temple, like other temples in Alampur, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a place of worship and pilgrimage for devotees.
- The temple is constructed in the Nagara architectural style and is built on an elevated platform.
- Its architectural plan is similar to the Vishwa Brahma Temple and Padma Brahma Temple.
- The temple comprises a small Mukha Mandapa, a large Maha Mandapa with 18 pillars, and a sanctum with a circumambulatory path.
- The ceiling of the Maha Mandapa features a carving of Nagabandha with seven heads.
- The doorway of the sanctum is adorned with sculptures of Garuda, Ganga, and Yamuna.
- Above the doorway, there is an image of Brahma performing penance.
- The round pillars in the hall are intricately decorated with floral designs and human figures.
- A small Nandi is installed in the Maha Mandapa, facing the sanctum.
- The four-pillared Mukha Mandapa features Dwarapalakas (guardians).
Exterior and Additional Shrines:
- The outer walls of the temple are adorned with carvings of toranas, warriors, Gandharvas, and Nagas.
- The sukhanasi (anteroom) has a round circle, which may have been left incomplete.
Festivals
Sharan Navaratri is the biggest festival at Alampur Temples. The concluding event, Theppotsavam (boat festival) is an eye-catching event held on Vijaya Dasami at Krishna – Tungabhadra Sangamam (confluence of River Krishna and Tungabhadra). Shivaratri is also celebrated here.
