Introduction

The Jagannath Temple is situated within the Ujjayanta Palace grounds in the city of Agartala, which is in the West Tripura District of the Indian state of Tripura. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra, the same deities worshipped in the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.The temple is located approximately 2.5 kilometers from the Nagerjala Bus Station in Agartala.Agartala is well-connected by highways, including NH44 and NH 44A, linking it to cities such as Silchar, Guwahati, Shillong, Dharmanagar, and Aizawl. Additionally, there is a bus service connecting Agartala to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

Puranic Significance

History: The Jagannath Temple in Agartala was built in the 19th century by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya of the Manikya Dynasty, the ruling dynasty of the erstwhile princely state of Tripura.
Neel Madhav Idol: It is widely believed that the Neel Madhav idol, which is consecrated in the Puri Jagannath Temple, was donated from the Jagannath Bari Mandir of Tripura. This adds historical and religious significance to the temple.
Architecture: The temple’s architecture is distinctive, with an octagonal base and brightly colored orange walls. It features four stories with stepped-up shikharas (towers) that are also orange in color.
Deities in the Sanctum: Inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, you can find idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra.
