Introduction
Uyyakkondan is located on the Trichy – Vayalur road in the distance and is about 15 km from Trichy. Perungudi can be reached from Trichy via Uyyakkondan. The temple has been built by Sundara Chola around 968 AD as the inscription of the eight-year region of Sundara Chola II is found in the Agastheeswarar Temple in Perungudi. Inscriptions of the 3rd year reign of Adithya Karikalan, son of Sundara Chola are found in this temple. In later Chola inscriptions, Perumudi is known as Agathiswaramudaiyar. The temple and its sculptures are a testament to the architecture and sculpture of the Sundara Chola period. The sanctum sanctorum houses sculptures of Dakshinamoorthy, Arthanariswarar, Brahma, Chandikeswarar, Vishnu and Murugan Ganapati. The sanctuary is set in stone as far as the roof of the plane, and the upper part of it is covered. The facade houses sculptures of Lord Murugan, Lord Vishnu, Lord Alinganamoorthy, Lord Ganapati and Lord Sani Bhagavan.
