Introduction
- Location:
- The Vishnupuram Dharmapureeswarar Temple is located in Vishnupuram town, within the Kudavasal circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu.
- The temple is positioned on the banks of a large pond, with the Kailasanath Temple located on the opposite side of the Agrahara Street.
- Puranic Significance:
- The town is named Vishnupuram because it is believed that Lord Vishnu stayed here for the wedding of Lord Shiva at Thiruveezhimizhalai.
- Suvetaketu, the son of a North Indian king, was prophesied to die at the age of 16. In a desperate attempt to overcome the curse of early death, Suvetaketu visited Thiruveezhimizhalai and worshiped Lord Shiva.
- As the time approached for his death, Suvetaketu held onto a Shiva linga for life. The deity Emadarman, who was involved in the event, tried to intervene by throwing a rope of affection around Suvetaketu.
- Lord Shiva, in response, emerged from the Shiva Linga, kicked Emadarman, and protected Suvetaketu, similar to how Lord Shiva protected Markandeya.
- The gods intervened and resurrected Suvetaketu, declaring that those engaged in Shiva Puja should not meet their death prematurely.
- The temple’s name, Dharmapureeswarar, is derived from the legend where Lord Dharma (a deity) worshiped Lord Shiva to cleanse himself of the sin of tying the rope around the Shiva Linga.
- Temple Significance:
- The Dharmapureeswarar Temple is believed to be over 1300 years old.
- The primary deity is Dharmapureeswarar, and the goddess is Dharmambikai.
- Dharma Vinayagar is the name of Lord Ganesha at the temple.
- The temple’s architectural features include an entrance with a shrine on the eastern side, with Nandi and Nag idols adorning the premises. There is also a shrine dedicated to Lord Subramaniar and a Vinayagar temple in the southwest corner of the temple’s outer courtyard (Prakaram).
- Beliefs and Rituals:
- A special belief is associated with worshiping here: if a devotee visits the temple, spends the night, bathes in the pond in the morning, and sees the Lord on Pongal, their wishes are said to be fulfilled.
- It is also believed that devotees who worship Dharmapureeswarar at this temple will be free from the fear of death and the state of dying.
Special Features:
- The temple has a serene location by a large pond, enhancing its significance and spiritual atmosphere.
- Dharmapureeswarar is considered to be the deity who blesses devotees with protection from untimely death and grants their wishes through sincere worship and offerings.
