Introduction
Visalur Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Visalur village, Kumbakkonam circle, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Visalur is less than two kilometers to the east on the south bank of the river ending at Tippirajapuram in the south of Kumbakonam. Formerly known as Visalyapuram, this place is now known as Visalur. As it was the place of worship of a sage named Vichitravisu, Visu-Nallur was later called as Visalur.
Puranic Significance
On the bank of Mudikonda and on the north bank of the Tirumalairajan River which flows south of this place. Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is located on the banks of the Mudikonda River, just before this temple there is Agatheeswarar Temple, which is two kilometers away on the road that goes along the Perumal Temple. On his way to the south, Agathiya muni worshiped at many places, one of which was this temple. This temple is an old Chola period structure and is believed to be more than 1300 years old. This temple, which had been decaying for a long time, was recently renovated.
The Lord is facing east and on his left side is Ambika also facing east. It is said that this is a wedding posture, so that the married couple come here to worship and the couple will live in harmony and the bride and groom will live happily ever after. A long cement mandapam has been constructed in front of the two sanctums of Lord – Agatheeswarar mother – Akhilandeswari. Tenmuga and Sanagadi sages are in a slightly dilapidated condition. The sanctum sanctorum is made of black stone but the restorers have painted over the black stone. People come only on special days as the temple is far away from the rural area.
