Introduction
Virupaksha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the Hemavathi Group of temples complex, in Hemavathi Village in Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh, India. Hemavathi is situated on the border of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The temple is situated on Hiriyur to Madakasira route.
Puranic Significance
The group of temples built between 8th and 10th century AD under the reign of the Nolamba Dynasty.
Special features
The temple has been classified as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The Virupaksha Temple is situated a short distance away from the main temple. In this temple, there is a Nandi statue made of black basalt granite, which is housed in a four-pillared mandapa on a raised platform, and it faces the Sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum itself is constructed on an elevated platform and comprises a pillared Mukha Mandapa (front hall) and the Sanctum.
The open Mukha Mandapa features an intricately carved door at its entrance, showcasing fine craftsmanship. Within the Sanctum, you will find a Shiva Linga, symbolizing Lord Shiva’s presence. Additionally, on the right side of the temple, there is another Shiva Linga placed on a broken square Avudaiyar.
Unfortunately, the Antrala (vestibule) and the mandapa of this temple have been completely lost over time, but the remaining elements provide a glimpse into its historical and architectural significance. There is a Museum set up by Archeological Department within the temple premises.
