Puranic Significance

HISTORY: Kanthan and Umakanthan, the two deities who were doing charity for the daily Shiva Puja of Nandi Thevar, one day forgot to put down all the flowers and see what they had to do when they saw that the flower had fallen down and turned into a fish and a branch. So Nandi Thevar got cursed and became a cat and a hunter. The general who touches both curses them. For a long time, cats and hunters worshiped the Lord in this temple. One day while hunting the cat, the hunter who came there hit the cat and it bled like silk on the Lord. At the same time the cat and the hunter were touched by the cat and the hunter when they put their hands to wipe the blood that had flowed on the Lord. Flower handicrafts are still made by hunters. History has it that when Sri Agasthiyar went to Kasi, he worshiped the Lord here.
