Introduction

  • Location: Villankurichi Village, Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu, located on the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road, north of Coimbatore.
  • Deity: The presiding deity is Lord Shiva (referred to as Bhagavatheeswarar) and the consort is Bhagavatheeswari.
  • The temple can be easily accessed by buses from Gandhipuram bus station in Coimbatore.

Puranic Significance:

  • The temple has historical significance, with inscriptions mentioning the Pandya Dynasty ruling the Kongu region. The fish symbol seen on the walls of the Artha Mandapam and the sanctum wall suggests that the temple may have been constructed during the Pandya period.
  • The temple is believed to be over 2000 years old, though it has been recently renovated.

Beliefs:

  • Devotees who visit and worship sincerely in this temple are believed to have all their wishes fulfilled.
  • Marriage Issues: It is believed that women who are barred from marriage can have their obstacles removed by participating in the Thirukalyanam (Divine Marriage) of the presiding deity during Chitra Poornima.
  • For Childless Couples: If childless couples participate in the 7 Pradosha Pujas and offer fruits to Lord Shiva, and later consume the prasadam, they are believed to soon receive blessings and have good results.

Special Features:

  • East-facing Temple: Upon entering the temple, there is a lamp post with a separate hall.
  • Carvings: The base has reliefs of Lord Murugan, Kamadhenu (the sacred cow), Lord Ganesha, and Trishul. Near the altar, there is a carved Nandi (bull) facing Lord Shiva.
  • The Maha Mandapam (great hall) houses separate shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Murugan, and Lord Anjaneya (Hanuman).
  • The sanctum sanctorum houses the Bhagavathy Iswaralingam, which is said to have self-manifested.
  • Near the Gomugam (the front of the sanctum), there is a shrine for Sandeeswarar.
  • To the right of the Moolavar Sannidhi (main shrine) is the Bhagwatheeswari Sannidhi dedicated to the goddess, built in the same architectural style as the sanctum sanctorum.
  • There is a south-facing Bhairava shrine and a Navagraha shrine outside the front hall.
  • On the south-west side, there is a 21-faced sculpture of Lord Krishna with a cow in the middle of a serpent. Nearby, there are idols of the Sabthakanniyar (seven virgins).
