Introduction

                Vilathur Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Vilathur village, Thiruthurapoondi circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Although Vilathur is a small town, there is one Shiva temple; one perumal temple and one Iyanar temple are there. The Shiva temple faces east along the road between the two large lakes. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord Agatheeswarar and Mother is called as Ananda Valli

Puranic Significance 

The lord Agatheeswarar; called because Agathiyar was worshipped. There are many places around this place named after Agatheeswarar. A new temple has come up after the destruction of the old temple. Here the Lord is facing east and Ambika is facing South side of the sanctum. The Lord is in Periyalinga Murthy. In front of him are ancient Nandi and an idol. Ambigai Anandavalli sanctum is towards the south. Among the deities are Dakshanamurthy and Lingothpavar Brahmin. Valampuri Vinayakar Murugan Gajalakshmi is in the usual place in Prakarasitalayas. Kashi Vishwanath is in a temple from north-east to west and the navagrahas, Bhairav, Sun and Moon, are in separate sanctums. The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old.
