Introduction
- Location: Vilangadu Village, near Acharapakkam, Madhuranthakam Circle, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.
- Presiding Deity: Adimoola Narayana Perumal, along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi. The Perumal is enshrined as a Swayambu Murthy (self-manifested deity).
- The temple is believed to be over 1500 years old.
Puranic Significance:
- The temple is associated with the Moksha of Gajendran (the elephant) as it is believed that Perumal granted moksha to Gajendran here, in the Supityaranya Shetram.
- According to the Puranas, it is here that Perumal taught Sages Narada and Bhrigu about the constellations, the influence of planets, and the connection between Navagrahas (nine planets) and human life.
- Bhukarpa Maharishi is said to have enshrined Perumal Thirumeni (the deity’s sacred body) and established the Thirukkulam (sacred pond) nearby, which is called Poogarpa Theertha. Bhumadevi (Mother Earth) is believed to have worshipped Perumal here daily.
- Astrologers visit this temple to offer blessings, as it is believed to be a place that helps them with their knowledge of planetary cycles and their effects on human lives.
- The place was later named Vilangadu after this tradition.
History:
- Initially, during the reign of the Vijayanagara kings, the temple saw five seasons of pujas, Pancha season festivals, and Brahmotsavam (grand festival).
- However, during the conflicts between the French forces of Puducherry and the British and Arcot Nawab forces, the temple was severely affected, and pujas were halted. The temple and its surrounding residences were damaged, leading to the eventual disrepair and disappearance of the temple. Over time, a cowshed was constructed at the site.
- Many years later, an Ayyappa devotee experienced possession and revealed the presence of the idols of Adimoola Narayana, Sridevi, and Bhudevi buried in the cowshed. The villagers then started worshipping the idols, and a small temple was built. The Kumbabhishekam (consecration ceremony) was performed to restore the temple.
Graha Dosha Nivarana Sthalam (Place for Remedy of Planetary Doshas):
- The temple is renowned for its ability to cure Graha Doshas (planetary afflictions) and bring blessings of peace and prosperity. Devotees from different parts of Tamil Nadu visit this temple to seek relief from their planetary doshas.
Beliefs:
- It is believed that worshipping at this temple can relieve devotees from Graha Doshas and bring them peace and prosperity.
Special Features:
- According to famous astrologers, this temple is located in a place called Varahekshatra, which is historically associated with the worship of Mahalakshmi during ancient times. This is why the Theertha Pond here is always filled with blooming lotus flowers, symbolizing prosperity and divine blessings.
- The temple is regarded as a healing place, with devotees believing it to be the best place for spiritual and physical healing in the surrounding area.
Festivals:
- Krishna Jayanti (celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth)
- Vaikunda Ekadasi (a significant festival in Tamil Nadu marking the day when Lord Vishnu opened the gates of Vaikundam)
