Introduction
Veeracholapuram Choleeshwarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Veeracholapuram, Kattumannarkoil circle, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. Veeracholapuram is one km east of Muttam -Kanatummullur (Kanatam Puliyur). Here the presiding deity is called as Choleeshwarar.
Puranic Significance
Veerarajendra Chola succeeded Rajendra Chola II to the Chola throne. He was the younger brother of Rajendra II. This Veeracholapuram, a town in the lower country, is the gift given in the name of this king. A temple here was taken over by the Cholas. The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old. This Shiva temple may have been in big temple at one time. Now the temple is in Small sanctum. The temple is very small, Lord Choleeshwarar is facing east side and Goddess is facing South side. Medium sized linga murti. Vinayagar and Thandayuthapani Murugan are present in the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord. On the south side is Tenmugan shrine.
