Introduction

Vadukakudi Kashi Viswanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Vadukakudi village, Thiruthurapoondi Circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Here the presiding deity is called as Kashi Viswanathar and Mother is called as Kashi Vishalaksi.

Puranic Significance

All the Vijayanagara Nayak kings are mentioned as Vadukars in the history of Tamil Nadu and the word ‘Vadugu’ can also found in the names of their towns. According to this, the place where the people lived was called as Vadugakudi. The Temple is believed to be 600 years old.

On the bank of a large pond, this Vadugabhairava is facing west. Eastward Lord is Kashivishwanath. Towards the south there is mother Visalakshi. This ruined temple has been resurrected. Nandi and some idols from it can be seen here and there. Vinayakar and Balamurugan are present at the Lord’s shrine gate. There is no such thing as sanctum sanctorum and they have set up a porch on the south side and a roof on the left side. A Muppum Mandapam connects the two sanctuaries, outside of which a Nandi Mandapam is constructed after a long gap. The surrounding wall work is still incomplete.

There was a time when Lord Brahma was incarnated, and Lord Shiva was worshiped because he appeared to Brahma as the guardian of the five directions, the chief of the creative work, and appeared with five heads. Along with that, he ordered that everyone should worship him first. About this, Lord Shiva decided to subdue Brahman. He created Bhairav with his power and ordered one of the Brahman’s heads to be brought. Bhairava, who came out, grabbed one of the heads in the middle of the five arms of Brahma with his claw. This is the information mentioned in the legend. The places where he sat are also indicated with the prefix Vadugan. One of them is called this vadukudi.
