Introduction

Vadakarai Kailasanathar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, Located in the Vadakarai village, Keevalur circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. This town is located on the south bank of Vettaar.Vadakarai is a small village, with two temples in the village; one is dedicated to Perumal temple in facing east; another one is Lord Shiva temple in south facing side. Periyakulam is located in the north adjacent to the temple. This is a small Shiva temple on the south side of the perumal temple. Shiva and Perumal temples are located together. Perumal’s name is Srisrinivasapperumal.

Puranic Significance

The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord Kailasanathar – and Goddess is called as Soundarya Nayaki. Towards the east in the sanctum sanctorum of the very small temple, Kailasanathar makes a beautiful appearance with a tall lingam. Ambikai Soundaranayaki has a sanctum facing south. At the gate of the sanctum sanctorum there are ancient Vinayagar, Valli and Deivanai along with Murugan. In front of the Amman shrine, there are Chandikeswarar, Bhairava and Nagar.

On the wall around the sanctum are Dakshanamurthys on the south side and Durga on the north side. In front of this temple there is a small banyan tree under which a statue of Lord Vishnu is broken and seems to be holding a wheel. Years ago, there would have been a large temple and great worship is conducted in the temple. Today there is no support except for a few farmers passing through the area.
