Introduction

Introduction:

The Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple is a revered Hindu temple located in Mayur Vihar Phase 1, New Delhi. The temple holds special significance for the Malayali and Tamil communities in the city. Dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan, another name for Lord Krishna, it is constructed in the traditional Kerala style of architecture. The temple features two prominent gopurams (tower-like structures) on the eastern and western sides, and includes multiple shrines dedicated to deities such as Lord Ganesha, Shiva, and Ayyappa. A unique aspect of the temple is the replica of Sarp Kavu, which is dedicated to the Naga Devatas.

Puranic Significance:

Construction History: The Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple was established in 1983 by the Arshi Dharm Parishad. Originally, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had allotted land for the temple in Janakpuri, West Delhi. However, this location was deemed unsuitable according to Vastu Shastra (ancient Indian architectural science), leading to the transfer of the land to Mayur Vihar Phase 1.
Foundation and Design: The foundation stone was laid by Prof. Vezhaparambu Parameshwaran Namboodiripad, who also served as the chief architect of the temple. Brahmamangalam Subramanian supervised the construction. A notable feature of this temple is that the main idol faces west, which is atypical as most Indian temples face east.

Special Features:

Architectural Style: The temple is built in the Kerala architectural style, with distinct gopurams on both the eastern and western sides. The use of red paint on the temple’s exterior adds to its aesthetic appeal.
Idols and Shrines: The temple houses various idols and shrines, including those of Lord Ayyappa, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha. The main idol of Lord Guruvayurappan is made of black bismuth stone and is depicted with four arms. This idol is believed to have been worshipped by Vasudev and Devaki, the parents of Lord Krishna.
Temple Complex: The Garbha Graha (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple is divided into two parts—one dedicated to Lord Krishna and the other to Goddess Bhagwati. The temple complex also features facilities such as a hall for marriages, conferences, and meetings, as well as the Karthiayani auditorium, which is used for cultural events and stage plays.
