Puranic Significance

The Umamakeswarar Temple was demolished and removed during the British rule as it was located on the railway line to the west of Koilur. It is said that the idols of the temple were placed in another Shiva temple of the city.

At the entrance to the city from the main highway, there are temples on the banks of the big lake. When you see the idols of the temple, it can be said that this temple is similar to the Chola period, but the temple as it stands today is only a Five hundred years old. Here the presiding deity is called as Pataleeswarar. Mother is called as Balambika. The temple is facing towards east side; Lord Pataleeswarar is in the hall as Periyalinga Murthy. At the gate of the sanctum sanctorum, Pradhana Vinayagar is in one floor and Dandayudhapani is in another floor. Opposite the sanctum sanctorum are the Nandi and the altar. In front of the shrine of Lord Balambika is there is the shrine of Umama Keswar and to the left of it is Umama Keshwari. Adjacent to the Lord’s shrine, Bhairav and Surya are in the north-east. During the Cholas era, tax-exempt lands were donated to the temples and the income from these lands was used for the daily worship of the temple.
