Introduction

  • Location:
    • The Kasi Viswanathar Temple is situated in Palaiyur Village, near Tirupattur, close to Siruganur in Trichy District, Tamil Nadu.
    • It is located near the renowned Thirupattur Brahmapureeswarar Temple.
  • Dedication:
    • The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kasi Viswanathar and Goddess Visalakshi.

Puranic Significance

Pulipaichi Theertham:

  • Saint Vyagrapada (Pulikkal Siddhar), known for having tiger-like feet, resided here and performed penance.
  • During a severe drought, he created the Pulipaichi Theertham (temple pond) by digging the ground with his tiger-like claws, bringing forth the sacred waters of the Ganges.
  • Legend states that Indra on his celestial white elephant was initially reluctant to share water meant for Thiruvanaikaval but later, on Lord Shiva’s command, offered the water to Vyagrapada. However, Vyagrapada refused and instead used the theertham he created.

Curse of Ayyanar:

  • A local legend states that Ayyanar once cursed the Brahmins of the village, leading to the abandonment of the temples and the migration of priests.
  • After the temples were restored, the Kumbabishekam (consecration ceremony) of the Ayyanar shrine was conducted, symbolizing a renewal of the village’s spiritual life.

Jeeva Samadhi of Sage Vyagrapada:

  • Sage Vyagrapada’s Jeeva Samadhi (final resting place) is located within the temple premises, opposite the shrine of Goddess Visalakshi.
  • The samadhi is encased in glass and is a significant spiritual site.

Special Features

  1. Age and Architecture:
    • The temple is believed to be over 1500 years old.
    • Features a 3-tier southern entrance gopuram and a large sacred tank (Pulipaichi Theertham) on the eastern side.
  2. Unique Deity Alignments:
    • The sunlight directly falls on Lord Shiva’s idol every day.
    • On full moon days, moonlight also falls on the deity, making these days particularly auspicious.
  3. Shrines and Koshta Vigrahas:

      • Iccha Sakthi, Gnana Sakthi, Kriya Sakthi, Vidya Sakthi, Siva Durga, and Chandikeswari.
    • The Amman sannidhi has separate Koshta idols for Iccha Sakthi, Gnana Sakthi, and others.
