Introduction

Thirumuruganatheeswarar Temple (also called Thirumuruganpoondi temple) in Thirumuruganpoondi, a panchayat town in Tiruppur district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the present structure of the temple is believed to have been built during the Kongu Cholas period in the 10th century. Shiva is worshipped as Thirumuruganatheeswarar and his consort Parvathi as Avudainayagi. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The temple does not have a rajagopuram, the gateway tower, a common feature in South Indian temples. Puranic Significance

Proud of his prowess gained through his penance to rule all the worlds up and down, demon Surapanma imprisoned all the Devas and harassed them. Lord Muruga determined to destroy him, fought with Him, cut him into two pieces and made a cock of one piece for His flag and the other a peacock for His vehicle. However, for the act of killing the demon, Lord Muruga incurred the Brahmmahati dosha. Lord Muruga came to Kailash and worshipped Shiva for the relief. For water, he hit the Earth with His Vel and created a spring. He installed a Linga and got relieved of the dosha. The Brahmmahati that left Muruga is now in form of a square stone under a neem tree, according to scriptural stories.

Special Features

The main festival of the temple is the 13 day celebrations in the month of Masi (February-March) and Maha Shivrathri in the same month. Tirukarthikai in November-December, Arudra Darshan in December-January, Annabishekam and Skanda Sashti in October-November, Thaipoosam in January-February, Navarathri in September-October, and Vaikasi Visakam in MayJune are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

Festivals

The “Vedupari Urchavam” in the Tamil month of Thai (April) is very famous here. The annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated in a grand manner in the Tamil month of Maasi (May). Soora Samhaaram, Thai Poosam, Pankuni Uthiram, Skantha Shashti are also significant festivals celebrated in this temple.
