Puranic Significance
Bhaskara Kshetram:
- According to the temple legend, after Goddess Lakshmi left Vaikuntha due to the insult caused by Sage Bhrigu, who struck Lord Mahavishnu on his chest (the place where she resides), Lord Vishnu also left Vaikuntha in search of her.
- During his search, Lord Vishnu encountered Goddess Padmavathi and desired to marry her. To fulfill this wish, Lord Vishnu offered penance for twelve years, worshipping Lord Surya, the Sun God, who is responsible for the birth and growth of all beings and the fulfillment of desires.
- In response, Lord Surya appeared before Lord Vishnu and granted his wish. This place is therefore also known as Bhaskara Kshetram (the sacred land of the Sun God).
Lord Venkateswara Constructed the Temple:
- As per the Venkatachala Mahatyam, Lord Suryanarayana played a key role in the blossoming of the Golden Lotus from Padma Sarovaram, from which Goddess Padmavathi emerged.
- In tribute to Lord Surya, Lord Vishnu, in his incarnation as Lord Venkateswara, constructed a temple and consecrated a fine black stone idol of Lord Surya.
- The temple is located 20 feet east of Padma Sarovaram, to the north of Sri Alarmelmangai Thayar Sannidhi in Sukapuri, the ancient name of present Tiruchanur.
