Introduction

Nandikeswarar Temple is dedicated to Bull Vehicle of Lord Shiva located at Thiruvotriyur, well known locality in Chennai City in Tamil Nadu. Nandikeswarar Temple is located at the north car street (northern side of Thyagarajar Temple) in Thiruvotriyur. The Temple is around 1000 years old. This is one of the rare temples dedicated to Nandi, the bull god, the Vahanam of Lord Shiva.

Puranic Significance

There are few temples of bull God in the neighboring Karnataka State. However, they all have big statues of Bull as the deities. However, this temple has a small idol of Nandi, in the human form. The idol of Nandi is in the standing posture with folded hands as if he is worshiping the Lord. Nandikeswarar temple is very small temple. Apart from this small shrine, there is no other shrine or idol located in this temple. This temple is hardly known to anybody including the people living in Thiruvotriyur. The sad part is that this temple is kept opened only for a very short time daily.

The Temple is located at about 100 meters from Theradi Bus Stop, 300 meters from Thyagarajar & Vadivudai Ambal Temple, 1 Km from Thiruvotriyur.
