Introduction
- Location: Situated on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River, where ten rivers join. Known as a place to pay homage to Pitras.
- Deity: Perumal stands on the south side and blesses Golam. The temple’s source plane is a philosophical one.
- Puranic Significance:
- Panchapandis: During their exile, the Panchapandis visited South India and stayed on the banks of the Neela River. They built temples and idols for daily worship.
- Arjuna: Erected the statue of Lord Vishnu, which is considered the headquarters.
- Separate sanctum sanctorums were consecrated for Dharmar, Nakula Sakadevar, and Perumal.
- Other shrines: Ganapati, Tetsinamoorthy, Shasta, Nagar, and Bhagwati Devi.
- Kasi Vishwanathare: A sage from the region visited Kasi, and during his return, a Shiva Lingam appeared at the site after he placed his umbrella on it. This is associated with Kasi Vishwanathare.
- Ithalam is an example of Vegan-Vaishnava unity in Kerala and is known as the ‘Five-headed Murti site’.
- Beliefs:
- People from Kerala regularly visit the temple, light a lamp for Perumal, and worship Tulsi.
- Special Features:
- This is the 67th Divya Desam out of the 108 Divya Desams, having received the Mangalasasana of Perumal.
- The majority of the people in the area speak Tamil.
- Beautiful sculptures on the temple walls depict Arjuna doing penance and scenes of Krishna Leela.
