Introduction
Thiruvilandur Thanthondreeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Thiruvilandur town, Mayiladuthurai Circle, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. To the east of the temple; is a three-tiered Rajagopuram. Here the Presiding deity is called as Thanthondreeswarar and Mother is called as oppilanayaki. In front of the gopuram is Nandi Mandapam. There is also a Kodimara vinayak nearby.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1300 years old. It is a single storied temple, eight feet from the ground level is the sanctum sanctorum. There is a cone-shaped mandapam in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Here the Lord- Thanthondreeswarar is facing towards the east; Goddess-Opilanayaki is facing towards the south.
To the ground floor, there is the Kashi Vishwanath sanctum, the Vinayagar Shrine in the west mandapam and next is the Murugan shrine and there are six Nagas in the Ashtanagas. There is an idol of Ambikai and an idol of Thenmugan in karuvai. In front of a lingam is a small Nandi. In the northwest is Mahalakshmi.
In the north-east there are two Bhairava’s, Saturn. It must be said that the temple is not properly maintained, the gurus come twice in the morning and evening and perform pooja and leave after some time. A temple is beautiful and special, even if it is near the city, but the reason why it does not become famous is because people do not visit it all the time.
