Many people will understand only if we say that Natham . There are not many houses nearby . Thiruvaragunamangai is the place where the Lord appeared to a Brahmin called Vedavithu . Puranic Significance
Vedavith ,a poor brahmin , who lived in Punyagosham Agraharam on the bank of river Rewa, wanted to do penance for getting the darshan of Maha Vishnu. The Lord, who knew this, took the form of an old brahmin, came to Vedavith’s place and told him that ‘Varagunamangai’ ( the present Natham ) was the spot ideally suited for his penance. Vedavith followed his advice meticulously. He went to the spot, performed deep penance chanting Asana mantra, got the darshan of Maha Vishnu and also attained Moksha. As the Lord appeared before Vedavith in response to his penance (chanting the particular mantra), here Maha Vishnu came to be known as Vijayasanar .
Beliefs
Ibandi Nadu Navathirupathis are revered as Navagrahas, similar to the Navagrahas in Chola . There is no separate lineage for the new planets as most of them function as nebulae . If you come to Navathirupathi and worship the planetary doshas in him, the planetary doshas will be removed .
Special Features
Varagunamangai, the one who granted his Dharshan to a Brahmin vedic scholar is referred to in one of the poems of Nammalwar, he must be posterior to Varaguna Pandya from whose name it is assumed Varagunamangai took its name. But there are number of instances where this logic is not pertinent.[4] The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram amidst lush vegetation around the temple. The lord here appeared in answer to the prayer of sage Romesar who performed severe penances for several thousand years
