Introduction
Thiruvalangadu Utpaleswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Thiruvalangadu, Kuttalam circle, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. Thiruvalangadu is 2 kilometres away from Kuttalam on the Mayiladuthurai – Kumbakonam road. This Shiva temple is located on the Kaviri road to the north of this temple. It is a small temple, with a three-tiered Rajagopuram. Here the Primary deity is called as Lord Utpaleshwar is towards the east and Mother is called as Utpalambikai is towards the south.
Puranic Significance
Utpalam means lotus, the Lord here is who has a gentle heart like a lotus. The Lord name may have come from being near Periyathamarai Kulam. Near the Lord’s gate is the great Vinayagar, and nearby is Nandi. This small temple has shrines of Murugan, Gajalakshmi, Vinayaka, Anjaneya, Chandikeswarar, Navagra and Dakshanamurthy. Looking at the beauty of the temple, it might have been built by the city dwellers and is believed to be 1000 years old. This temple is under the control of Hindu Charities Department. Only one time pooja takes place in the temple.
